For the Beauty : The Events of the 18th Festival

Having launched its programmation on May 22nd 2019, the festival is looking forward to offer the public an 18th season filled with unforgettable musical moments. For the occasion, more than 65 professional musicians will offer a total of 25 performances to which music lovers, tourists and family are invited from August 3rd to 11th. Each year, Concerts aux îles du Bic offers unique programs where tradition meets audactiy and the quality of its programmation has been rewarded many times by Opus awards. Music from the great composers, talented musicians, wonderful concert settings surrounded by the splendid nature of Rimouski, Bic and Saint-Fabien : this is the recipe for                                                                       a perfect summer festival!

This edition will start with a grandiose opening concert around the music of Chopin on August 3rd in Bic’s church. The genius of this virtuoso composer will be celebrated in the concert Chopin Légendaire by the great pianist Maxim Bernard supported by the Quatuor Saint-Germain and Annie Vanasse at the double bass.

On Wednesday August 7th, the works of french composers Debussy, Bizet and Fauré will be at the core of the concert Forestare lyrique. This unique concert will showcase the Forestare guitar orchestra, the mezzo soprano Geneviève Levesque and the bass Alexandre Sylvestre.

The amazing acoustic of the church of Saint-Fabien will be put forward in the concert Terrestre-Céleste on Thursday August 8th. A pre-concert talk with Mario F. Paquet will allow you to fully appreciate the richness of this concert’s program. In the first half, the Nova-Scotia Helios vocal ensemble will perform an extravagant and colorful repertoire of Renaissance songs. In the second half, Fauré’s unique Requiem will be performed by  2 brilliant soloists, soprano Éthel Gueret and bass Alexandre Sylvestre, supported by our Festival Choir and an ensemble of 13 musicians. Hornist virtuoso Louis-Phillippe Marsolais will be amongst the musicians directed by James Darling .

On Friday August 9th, many activities will be offered to our public. First in the morning, a guitar masterclass will be given to young guitarists by musicians from the Forestare ensemble. This free activity will be held at the Conservatoire de musique de Rimouski. In the afternoon, families are invited for a unique choose your own adventure concert that follows the path of Bach’s musical pilgrimage in Jean-Sébastien et la marche à pied. This visually stimulating and interactive event will take place at 4pm at Salle Desjardins-Telus. To end the day, our traditional cabaret will take a special form this year with the concert Le sacré et le profane presented at the Vieux-Théâtre de Saint-Fabien. Multi-instrumentalist Jean-François Bélanger will be joining force with the baroque ensemble Fresque to present a very personal interpretation of traditional and baroque music played on his swedish nyckelharpas. This concert is presented in collaboration with the Vieux-Théâtre de Saint-Fabien.

On the morning of Saturday August 10th, the public is invited to an intimate concert at the charming chapel of Saint-Fabien-sur-Mer. Mozart’s string quintet in G minor and refreshing works by Vivaldi and Reicha played by a wind ensemble are at the heart of this concert Entre amis : musique pour ensembles.

The end the festival on a high note, the closing gala À l’aube des Temps modernes will be presented on the evening of Saturday August 10th. Hosted by the great Mario F. Paquet, this concert has everything to amaze and surprise you: upbeat jazzy and swinging music will make you want to dance. Pianist Maxim Bernard is back in Ravel’s virtuostic Concerto in G. Amongst the other artists that will participate in the celebration, Mathieu Lussier on bassoon, Maurice Laforest on piano, Benjamin Raymond on trumpet and the unique duo Huard-Gagné. A concert that you will remember for a long time!

 

Finally, the end of the 18th edition will be celebrated on Sunday August 11th with a free outdoor concert presented at the Parc national du Bic by the Trio Salicorne. These traditional musicians will charm you with their energy and enthusiasm. Québec folk music, celtic airs and medieval melodies will take you on a musical journey in one of the most beautiful landscape of the region at the Ferme Rioux.

With the collaboration of different partners, many events will be held during all summer at different locations around the region. The well known and loved Duos de la relève are back at the tea house in Bic’s National Park every Sunday at 2pm from June 30th until July 4th. The musical squad will perform at Bic’s Rendez vous festif on July 27th and on July 31st for the friendly 5 à l’Angélus concert with the Trio Salicorne. The Duo Berger-Vincent will also animate Rimouski’s public market on August 3rd. With all that, the festival will also be present in different CPE to initiate children to the beauty of music.

The complete programmation is available online at www.bicmusique.com. Tickets are available at Spect’Art Rimouski and at the Touristic office of Saint-Fabien. Passports that give access to all the concerts of the programmation are also sold at a special discount price. Once again, the Festibus Hydro-Québec is back this year to offer free transit to the different concert locations. A friendly and green alternative!

It is worthy to note that Concerts aux îles du Bic works to promote music in the Bas-Saint-Laurent Region since 2002 and is the only chamber music festival in Eastern-Québec.
